Antonia S. Byatt estudió en York y en el Newnham College, en Cambridge. Ha sido profesora en la Central School of Art and Design y en el Uni­versity College de Londres. Entre sus libros se cuentan las novelas Shadow of a Sun, The Game, The Virgin in the Garden y Still Life, un ensayo sobre las novelas de Iris Murdoch y otro sobre Coleridge y Wordsworth. Posesión fue galardonada con el Booker Prize en 1990 y también con el lrish Times-Aer Lingus Literature Prize, el más prestigioso premio irlandés como la mejor novela internacional del año.
