Brujería

A portrait of new forms of relationships, the dangers of nostalgia and the struggle to find meaning and purpose.

While summering in his childhood village, Diego, the forty something protagonist meets the enigmatic Pons family: Julio, an ambitious businessman from a humble background, his beautiful wife Laura, gripped by a mysterious illness, and his sister Berta, who seems trapped between family loyalty and her own desires. Back in Barcelona to start a new job, the relationship between Diego and the Pons family takes an unusual turn. Over the course of a year, he his friendship with Laura develops and Berta, challenges him intellectually, his eyes open to some uncomfortable truths as he delves into some painful memories. Torné masterfully explores the psychology of his characters through his evocative prose, explores human relationships and the boundaries of love, questioning if we can escape our pasts.

"The portrait of Laura and Berta that emerges is literarily superb, and there is no need to call upon masters of this fabrication of consciousness such as Henry James, Iris Murdoch, or Saul Bellow. But perhaps it's work noting the kinship with nearby authors such as Álvaro Pombo or Javier Marías (to whom he also pays tribute). (...) The universality of what is represented, along with the excellence of its formal and stylistic treatment, makes this novel an intense experience, not only aesthetically but also cognitively." —Domingo Ródenas de Moya, Babelia

"Brujería is, above all, a novel of individual lives and destinies, and simultaneously about collective destinies. It is, above all, the story of authentic characters who build and discover themselves throughout the course of the novel through their conversations." — Pilar Castro, El Cultural

"Brujería is, at once, an attempted spell and a desperate search. A book full of daydreams, visions, dreams, and premonitions." —José de Montfort, Zenda

"Torné explores the distinct possibilities that romantic relationships offer." —Anna María Iglesia, Letra Global

"A suspense that gains strength underneath familiar habits is highlighted, as well as the psychological portrait of the characters, their triumphs and failures, and the magic touch of hallucinations and dreams that torment the protagonist." —Jesús Ferrer, La Razón

"The brilliant, if not blindingly so, writing of Gonzalo Torné (Barcelona, 1976) submerges the reader in a story that zigzags through two levels: the new friendships the narrator is establishing and the backs of the darkness surrounding his past." —Iñigo Urrutia, El Diario Vasco
